The shell monument in honor of Gen. William H. Lytle was erected at Chickamauga in 1884 and as late as 1936 it still had a pyramid of cannon shells like similar monuments in the Park. At some point the monument was cannibalized and many of the cannon shells were stolen.
The Foundation is assisting in this $65,000 project to restore the monument to its original condition as seen in this circa 1900 photo below. Dedication of the restored monument is set for September 20, 2013 – 150th anniversary of the death of Gen. Lytle on this spot.
